Essex Delta Blues ......The Festival

Due to some last minute changes, the final running order for the Festival which is to be held at Pam's Bar, The Essex Arms, Warley Hill, Brentwood, Essex on the 20th, 21st & 22nd of October has been amended. The Festival features most of the bands & artists who appear on the CD and will offer a unique opportunity to catch a live appearance by Crying Out Loud. Essex Delta Blues CD Distribution Deal

SXDeltaBluesCDRay Bartrip of Bad Moon Records has announced that he has struck an exclusive distribution deal with Proper Music. At the moment details of the release dates for the shops are awaited but it is expected that these will to be around 18th April 2005.

Whilst the deal does not include pro-active marketing or promotion it will mean that there will be adverts in trade papers etc. and the album will be on lists and databases available to all the shops including the major outlets and it is to be hoped that some, at least, will order one or more copy. It will mean that the CD will given exposure all over the country and online at outlets such as Red Lick etc. which, as Ray says: "can’t be bad for all of us".

Copies of the CD can still be obtained from the bands and artists appearing on it or from Bad Moon Records.

      Essex Delta Blues CD

November saw the launch of PhoenixFM.com sponsored “Essex Delta Blues – A Sampler”, a CD featuring tracks from 17 Blues bands and artists put together by Ray Bartrip of Bad Moon Records, himself a noted musician who plays in a number of bands, and Ashwyn Smyth, presenter of Digital Blues, PhoenixFM.com’s twice weekly programme.

The launch took place at top Essex Blues venue, the New Crawdaddy Blues Club in Billericay where Ashwyn is the resident compere and DJ. The launch, which was attended by a number of the bands and artists who appear on the CD, featured sets from Roy Mette and the Heaters who were joined on stage by various guests.

The CD came about after both Ray & Ashwyn had, quite independently, nurtured the idea of putting together a CD to promote the fine Blues tradition that exists in Essex and a chance telephone conversation led to this collaboration about which they are both very excited.

Ashwyn said: “Since Digital Blues was born on the Internet service of PhoenixFM.com in June 2001 it has become an important resource for the Blues community, both in Brentwood & Billericay and more widely throughout Essex and surrounding areas. From the beginning, one of our main thrusts has been the promotion of both performers and venues through the radio shows and through web-based gig guides, news pages, e-mailings etc. We were honoured when we were described by a top Essex band who play all over the UK, Europe & Scandinavia as being “the voice of the Blues for Essex”.

This CD is a logical progression of this work as far as Digital Blues is concerned and we are undertaking a programme of mailing copies of the CD to venues, promoters, radio stations etc. to bring to their attention the wealth of talent that resides in Essex and, we hope, to persuade them to give them airplay, gigs etc.”

The tracks were recorded all over Essex although a number were laid down at Ray Bartrip’s Moon Studios in Romford. Ray said ”There has always been some formidable musical talent in Essex, much of which never gets recorded. I wanted not only to create a showcase to bring these bands to the attention of a wider audience but to create, with this and possible subsequent albums, an historic archive of the great Blues and R’n’B coming from our county”.

Ray & Ashwyn hoped that the CD would help promote the wonderfully varied bill of fare that is the Blues in the county unfortunately better known for its less cultural traits! After some months’ work, they had more than 70 minutes of music which mines the rich vein of talent with which the county is blessed.

Essex has long had a tradition of top class musicians, some excellent venues and a great heart. Bands such as Dr. Feelgood firmly established the Essex Delta sound and spawned many imitators, not just here in the county. But more than that, they encouraged bands to have a go and get out there to play! Today, Essex is well known for the Feelgoods, The Hamsters and the Cadillac Kings to name but a few, but they are just the tip of the iceberg.

As Ashwyn says in the sleeve notes “On this CD we offer just a taste of what else the Essex Blues scene has to offer but, like any good appetiser, I am sure it will leave you wanting more. If nothing else, this CD proves to anyone who doubted it that the Blues are alive and thriving in Essex and that London & the Home Counties do not have the monopoly as far as talent goes!”

Featuring more than fifty percent original material, the CD tracks cover a wide spectrum from the stunning solo work of Roy Mette, through duos such as the Jives, Los Tres Armadillos, a Burnham based trio, to top Essex bands such as Bad Town Blues, the Rockin’ Armadillos, the Swamp Cats and many more. Local representation is by Brentwood’s Temperton Bones and Clive Mulcahy, guitarist & singer with bad Town Blues and Billericay’s Andy Robinson Band.Supporting Essex Blues

What they are saying about the Essex Delta Blues CD

Very interesting some very good performances.

Blake Powell – Note-Music (the Barcodes, Richie Milton, Paul Cox & Mark Michael)

As many of the musicians concerned read this list I shall not single
out tracks I liked more than any of the others, though they were all
listenable and great fun. Overall, the music has an appealing and
rather cheeky swagger about it which -- appropriately -- recalls the
Feelgoods.

Henry Gee – SXBLUES

It's a super collection of Essex R&B.

Trevor - Mayfest

“Barry’s CD of the Month” - “the cream of the current crop” - “The two best cuts hit the same groove - The Nightflies' insanely catchy "Delta Moon" and The Rocking Armadillos' delightfully dirty version of Bobby Mack's "Honeytrap". Variety is provided by the cultured swing of The Heaters, Roy Mette's solo wizardry and power rock from Texas Thunder.”

Dave Kingsbury – The Running Horse, Nottingham - www.therunninghorse.ukpub.net

Feel free to encourage any of the bands on the CD who have upcoming gigs in Essex to get in touch with me. It's really useful when you have a CD like this as it represents so many artists/bands so is a "gift" as far as radio broadcasters like you and I are concerned.

Bridget Metcalfe – Live Music Correspondent – BBC Essex

Just to say thanks very much for the copy of Essex Delta Blues you sent me. I’m afraid we have booked all the bands for the Linton Festival 2005, but I think we will definitely be interested in some of the bands for 2006.

Blues "Essex Delta Blues: A Sampler " Bad Moon Records - badmoon.uk.com

There was a time when any half decent r&b band from Essex would cause a stir in the capital, and in the fullness of time go on to conquer far flung posts of Europe. But with the demise of the quality end of Pub Rock, and the blues circuit in general, those halcyon days have given way to tired old bands playing very obvious covers.

Happily this album restores a little faith. Blues fanatic and Phoenix Digital Blues DJ Ashwyn Smith very kindly brought this album to my attention, and the 17 track effort while covering all styles of blues, r&b, Rock Blues and Swing, maintains a high standard throughout.
And let's face it you always start with your trump card, and the Nightflies give the old Feelgoods a run for their money with the magnificent self penned "Delta Moon" on which vocalist/song writer Mark Sibley and guitarist Kevin Webb both add weighty contributions.

It has to be said there are plenty of covers, but the Heaters deliver an authoritative "T-Bone Shuffle", and long time Essex blues star Tim Aves and The Rockin Armadillos throw in a heavy duty rendition of Bobby Mack's "Honey Trap", while The Jives strip things down for a down home harp/guitar reading of Micky Jupp's "Down At The Doctors".

The afore mentioned Tim Aves also contributes an acoustic original in trio format, while special mention should be made of the very soulful r&b groove of The Harvey Williams band's "Ain't No Midnight Train". Throw in Roy Mette's acoustic blues and Cryin' Out Loud's clever fusion of heavy slide guitar ad female vocal, and you soon start to believe that all the best things pertaining to R&B really do still come from Essex.
